Project Updates
Environment /
Place
Update provided by Dave Moore
A meeting with Shire officers in the latter
half of the month are expected to resolve a number of minor
issues. This should allow the Minister to formally approve our
rezoning application. This will probably be on the basis of 80
building lots rather than the 104 that we applied for and had
been endorsed by Mundaring Shire council. We remain hopeful that
we will secure approval, substantially as we had wanted, within
the coming weeks.
The progress of the revised SomerVille LSIP
(Local Subdivision and Infrastructure Plan) continues to be
stalled pending resolution of the rezoning of our land.
The Shire planners have supported the new car
park plan and minor repositioning of our community house.
Unfortunately, they have decided that these changes have to be
advertised, thereby delaying us for another two months.
Andrew Hemsley will be coordinating the
preparation of our Environmental Management Plan (EMP). This is
a key document that outlines the existing environment (in its
broadest sense) of the land, identifies potential impacts
arising from our village, and proposes/commits to ways of
managing those impacts. More on this next month.
The Building Guidelines were discussed in
detail at the SomerVille Sunday on 1 October. It looks like
we’re getting close to a final version!
Mid October saw a number of us bunkered down
in Charcoal Cottage for a planning workshop. Many areas of the
physical planning of the village were discussed including such
items as; water supply, usage of existing buildings, drainage
and food production. The notes from this will be written up
later in the month and we hope to share the results of our
deliberations towards the end of the year.
We’ve received the results of water analyses
undertaken last month. They confirmed the suitability of our
groundwater for non-potable uses, some of it was better than
rainwater according to our consulting hydrologist. Additionally,
our samples were analysed for the presence of unacceptable
levels of a wide range of pesticides. They have come back with a
“clean bill of health”. Further testing was undertaken during
the month of the potential water supply from our infiltration
gallery.
The Biolytix waste treatment system has been
delivered to SomerVille and installed to the east of Walnut
Cottage. We hope to have it functioning before November.

Enterprise &
Economics
Update provided by Paul Antonelli
A number of enterprises will begin to move
into implementation phase over the next few months. This will
include Solar Power, Organic Agriculture and Workshop Hire /
Storage enterprise. This is a new phase and we are currently in
the process of developing an appropriate business plan structure
and format to facilitate this process. As is part of the defined
process it will be necessary for these enterprises to go through
the Core Enterprise Group. The business plan developed will
provide the background information for this group so that a
decision can be made regarding each specific enterprise.
The SomerVille Ecovillage™ budget is now in
the final stages of being completed. Included within this budget
has been the allocation of suitable resources for key
enterprises. An overall review will be conducted to ensure that
key objectives for SomerVille are being met and achieved.
Two more potential Enterprise Champions have
been identified. Julian Ilich is currently in the process of
kicking off the feasibility process for the Procurement Service
Enterprise. The potential scope of this enterprise may include
the following:
-
Information and advisory service for full
range of sustainable, cost effective building materials,
appliances, and products relating to creating a low impact
sustainable lifestyle
-
Provision of service and advice relating
to the holistic application and integration of sustainable
technology with a low impact lifestyle.
-
Procurement service which may include
advice, order placement, coordination, delivery, follow up
service, installation, sourcing, negotiating, and bulk
purchasing for all items as defined above.
-
Providing support service in relation to
community members complying with SomerVille Building
Guidelines.
-
Development of a database relating to all
information and advice within the scope of this enterprise
-
Existing residential and commercial
sustainability auditing service
-
Proposed building design sustainability
auditing service.
Alex Hyndman has submitted an enterprise
application to develop a Car Sharing enterprise at SomerVille .
Alex identified this as an enterprise he was passionate about
developing and discovered recently that we have been looking at
someone to develop this enterprise at SomerVille . He sees that
by facilitating short term car rental, it will be possible to
achieve a direct goal of allowing people to not own a private
car. This in turn encourages the use of other transport modes
and a more localised lifestyle. An initial meeting has been held
with Alex and it is envisioned that he will be embarking on the
Enterprise Champion process shortly.
If you require further information in
relation to the work that we are doing please do not hesitate to
contact us.

Sunday 1st October
Karen Moore
Congratulations to all those members who
managed to wade through the extensive documentation! The day was
spent under the trees receiving constructive feedback on the
documentation. It was wonderful to have so many members (40ish)
participating and in such a positive manner during a very long
day. Well done everyone!
I was humbled by the amount of trust shown to
the Steering Team (“our” Steering Team, so kindly pointed out by
Peter Weatherly) and how much trust the steering team has in the
community.
Cultural Social
Core Group
Karen Moore
Our last meeting was held on Thursday 12
October, with renewed energy and vigour!
Following Chris Doonan’s suggestion last SS
we have decided to hold the forums on the 2nd Wednesday of every
month in 2007, starting on 14 February. Our core group meetings
will be held the following week on a Thursday at Charcoal
Cottage from 3pm to 5pm.
Why are we telling you this? Because,
following the review of the functioning of the core groups it
was evident that the core groups function is a very important
link with the community. So in order to expand that community
interface, we have decided to invite 2 additional community
members to the Cultural Social Core Group meetings. Please
contact Paul Moes (paul.m@greenedge.org
or 9572-4550) if you would like to join us at any of our
meetings. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 16 November.
The purpose of the forum is to provide a
space for open dialogue. The goal is to have the
conversation but not make any decisions. There will be
no reading prior to the forum; nor will there be collective note
taking. Individuals can take their own notes and forward to the
appropriate core group if they would like to. We invite members
to introduce a topic for discussion/conversation by sending a
paragraph on their desired topic to Vida (vida@greenedge.org)
or Karen (karen@greenedge.org)
by the first Wednesday.
(We will produce a calendar of events/reminders early in the New
Year!)
We also discussed how childcare arrangements
may evolve next year with SomerVille becoming a construction
site. A number of good suggestions were put forward and we will
provide you an update at SS on 5 November.
We thought it would be nice to have an End of
Year/Festive Season Celebration on Sunday 10 December, a little
closer to the end of the year than 3 December. So please mark
that day in your diary as a day of fun and celebration!
Postponement of
Open Day
Karen Moore
It has been decided to postpone the Open Day
until we have some definite news on the rezoning. Given the end
of the year is fast approaching, even if we have news on the
rezoning soon, it will not be sufficient time to arrange an Open
Day. So, you’ll have to wait until next year for this exciting
event!
Young Adults
Group
Christophe Bouyac
With the Postponement of the Open Day, the
camp over / party the night before has also been postponed.
This party was going to be the first major
event organised by the Young Adults Group and the plan was to
not only have a good time and celebrate but to also attract more
young people to SomerVille with the idea being that they will
come for the party, camp over and stay for the open day. Then
when they find out how fantastic SomerVille is they become
intending residents.
However we cannot postpone our first event
any longer, and as one of the main purposes of the young adults
group was to make sure there is suitable entertainment and
activities for younger folk, we have decided to go ahead and
have a party regardless.
It has been decided and agreed that this
first party will be on the evening of Saturday the 9th
December, and will round off the end of year celebration. So
why not grab your tent and come party with us for the night and
sleep all Sunday. Specific details of the party and end of year
celebration will be made available in the next few weeks.
If you are interested in becoming more
involved with the Young Adults Group or would like to help set
up for the camp over for the open day please contact Christophe
on
christophe@greenedge.org .

My Story
My Story of
SomerVille
Robin Garbutt
My
association with SomerVille Ecovillage™ began on 30 June 2002.
Actually my dream of something like SomerVille began at least a
couple of years before that. I’d been thinking about community
living (since I come from a small family) and healthy living
(growing food without chemicals) and a modern energy efficient
home (perhaps architect-designed). It seemed that most
eco-living was overseas, and so I was thrilled when I spied a
tiny 6-line ad hidden in the Subiaco Post about a meeting in the
pink Earthwise church at Subiaco regarding an ecovillage planned
for the Perth Hills.
Paul’s and Dominic’s PP presentation covered all
questions I may have had, and I was also quite taken by the
delicious muffins afterwards! While talking with Paul and Mecthild Moes in the car park, I thought that if they were the
type of people going to be living at SomerVille , I was very very
interested.
And I’ve been heavily involved, and excited,
and learning ever since! Even to the point of being an Ecocom
committee member for two years.
The SomerVille Ecovillage™ is already
attractive, and it doesn’t take too much imagination to
visualise many intelligent and passionate neighbours enjoying a
new green paradise in harmony with nature and her finite
resources. What a WOW!! The year 2008 will be so rewarding, with
our own community building, the first residents creating beauty
and comfort with a small footprint, and entrepreneurs setting up
businesses and providing employment to meet our everyday needs.
The members who regularly join the many
gatherings in SomerVille are already my friends, and I believe
that our relationships can only get better, so bring it on!!
