Project Updates

Misting Morning out at the SomerVille Ecovillage™
Environment
/ Place
Update provided by Dave Moore
The
Environment / Place core group currently comprises of Dominic
Carlino, Dave Moore, Brett Davies, Malcolm Robb Neil Robertson and
Paul Antonelli.
In
December and early January we have seen a good deal of activity in
the Environment & Place arena. We have negotiated with WA Health
dept (DoH) and been granted a
dispensation that will allow us to have lot sizes as originally
planned (rather than 2000m2 minimum). Detailed lot layouts have been
developed to the stage that they should be ready to peg on the
ground during February, and this will allow us to launch the lot
selection process amongst the community.
In
December Murdoch Uni staff undertook a study of the near surface
soils to assess their suitability for greywater disposal by
subsurface irrigation. Laboratory tests have confirmed the soils’
suitability, and the report will be used to support our rezoning and
subdivision applications.
Rezoning
is progressing well, and we expect to have the amendment endorsed by
Mundaring Shire Council at its February meeting. A draft Local
Subdivision Infrastructure Plan (LSIP) had been submitted to
Mundaring planners and, as a result of prompt feedback from them, a
revised version has also now been submitted, dealing with any issues
identified, and now paving the way for adoption at the Council’s
February meeting.
Progress
is also being made on other fronts. The Community House development
application has approval subject to us submitting a car park plan.
This will be done in late January, and should hopefully lead to a
design and construct contract being concluded during February. A
group has been formed to research suitable building guidelines, and
to develop a building environmental rating system. This will be
used to guide and evaluate building proposals within SomerVille .
In recent
weeks we’ve been in contact with subdivision engineers, water supply
engineers, Permaculture designers and project planning consultants
and anticipate busy but rewarding months ahead. All in all a very
busy and rewarding period for the SomerVille Ecovillage™ Environment
/ Place team.
Enterprise
Update provided by Paul Antonelli
Currently
the Enterprise core group comprises of Paul Antonelli, Helmut Hilz,
Andrea Ling, Robin Garbutt, Sarah Robertson, Vida Carlino and Angela
Williamson.
In
relation to the Economics / Enterprise aspect of SomerVille the time
has come to start putting into place and implementing feasible
businesses. As a result of the analysis from the Economics survey 18
new potential enterprises have been identified as possibilities.
These are:
Solar Power Utility
Car Pooling with Hybrid
cars.
Chalets
Insurance
Workshop/Storage/Hire
Bakery
Groceries/Fruit &
Veggies –
Building
Materials/Procurement
Recycling/Second
Hand/Salvage Yard
Finance Provision
Construction
Labour/Trades Registry/Service
Phone/Internet/IT
Services
Café
Business Support
Services
Enterprise Facilitation
Services
Ecovillage Model
Health & Healing
Education
The next
step is to explore possibilities for these businesses and conduct
feasibility studies. In order to move this activity forward an
Action Enterprise Group has been established. Finalisation of the
analysis from the survey will take place shortly which will provide
a model which includes likely migration of members to SomerVille and
likely expenditures which can be expected for the various
businesses. This information will feed into the feasibility studies.
Once an
enterprise has been identified as feasible we will then be looking
for people to get involved in taking these businesses on or becoming
key drivers. This will be both from inside and outside the
community. It is expected that this process will begin in March.
We are
also looking for an Economics Development Coordinator / Enterprise
Facilitator as a key role in this process. This is currently out for
advertising. In our overall budget funds have been allocated to put
towards business set up and start up costs.
If you are
interested in operating or possibly working in any of the businesses
please let Paul Antonelli know (to obtain Paul’s contact details

Social / Cultural
In the Interim the Social
/ Cultural Core group comprises Paul Moes, Vida Carlino, Dominic
Carlino, Gina Price, Robyn Antonelli, Andrew Hemsley, Karen Moore
and Grace Minton. The group will change as we define our required
skills and resources.
On the 17th January we had a
full day of brainstorming and planning to give the group some
purpose, direction and clarity. We laid the table with our ideas and
aspirations for the core group. We had to get a bigger table! We
distilled our ideas into a Cultural Social Core Group vision, being:
“a
diverse village culture based on harmony and wisdom, which nurtures
and supports health and well-being and balances individual, village
and community needs”.
From the vision came eight
mission statements to give the group even more purpose and
direction. The statements relate to governance, project hand-over,
events and activities, community spirit, growth and education, art
and culture, responsibility and communication.
We had our first formal
meeting of 2006 on the 23rd January at the Rose and Crown Hotel in
Guildford. We organised the agenda for the next SomerVille Sunday,
shaping up to be a diverse and exiting day that you won’t want to
miss. We decided to meet monthly and came away with some definitive
and not-so-definitive actions to work on, including:
Distilling the Givens and Provocative
Propositions into a summary for the community;
Estimating the skills and resources
required to implement the group’s themes;
Tips for email communications.
The first point of contact
for the group is Paul Moes (If you wish to obtain his details email
newsletter@sev.net.au) please feed any queries, comments, ideas
or feedback for this group through to Paul. Don’t be shy, you never
know until you give it a go.

Sweet Wine
Christophe Bouyac
On
Saturday the 3rd of December we started to bottle up the 2005
vintage. This year we were a bit more organised as we had a new pump
for filling the wine bottles and a new machine for corking the
bottles. Of course the best part was sampling the wine; well you do
have to make sure its ok. We then ended the day with a wonderful
lunch.

Midnight New Years Eve 2005/06
A
SomerVille New Years
Christophe Bouyac
On the 31st
December we celebrated New Years SomerVille Style; we wanted to do
something special and different so we decided to celebrating the
four elements Earth Air Fire and Water. So people walked the
mandala, placed a new year’s resolution on the wind, gave a thought
to a flame, and placed a flower in the water. It was a New Years
filled with good spirits, laughter, blessings and joy, with a huge
meal being shared, some great musical performances and dancing into
the early hours.
