The New Path at SomerVille

The Path around the ecovillage has now been completed and is open for us all to enjoy, already a number of people are using this path for an enjoyable walk around the ecovillage.

However we need to make people aware that this path has not been designed for vehicle use, so please don't drive on the path.

Gumnut Hut in Parkerville for Rent

If you are in transition and looking for a cute place in the hills, then please contact Vera, on 9295 6473 daytime or at home 99294 4573.

The hut is about 30 meters from the house, the room is around 20 square meters. It has a composting toilet next to it, an outdoor tap with basin, and a work bench where you could cook if someone wants to, but the previous people came into the house and used the main kitchen and also the shower in the house. It has a cute verandah and is surrounded by bush. It costs either 120 per week incl. electricity (it is air-conditioned for heating and cooling) or 100 if someone wants to do regular garden work. I expect the person to help with the pool in summer and with the leaves all year round.

Project Updates

CUPID
(Community Unifies People in Diversity)

Update provided by Kara Holt-Gragg

Another two months and another Scoop Submission. The CUPID team has been flat out organising and facilitating a number of different community events over the last 8 weeks or so. SomerVille Sundays, Coffee Shops, Pillar Meetings and Busy Bees - you name it we've had it!

At SomerVille Sunday (SS) on April 13th, we had three guests give presentations on house design and building. Fiona Hogg from Paradigm Architects, Jeff Thierfelder from Evoke developments and Geff Britton from Econstruct gave really informative and interesting presentations and answered all our questions as a panel. They got all our house designer imaginations exploring some great concepts. Jeff Thierfelder returned again for the May SS with some of the first house and land package designs, they are great and we had some brainstorming toward some new designs. If you haven't seen them they are on the website in the members only section and stay tuned because there are more to come.

The yellow shed is in its new location and has a wonderful set-up. The new kitchen is spacious with room for all, and if you haven't seen our new sinks you're in for a great treat. Rob worked hard to get our wood fired stove all set up, it even got a new paint job. The new layout is also cosy nestled in between the two sheds and Sarah made us some lovely new cushions for our benches. We have a great open area that has been warmed by a few fires, and our new composting toilet is fit for a king.

We are putting together a new orientation process for future members. The plan is to support new members to engage in an experience of what living at SomerVille entails. It will cover the history, the story of the SomerVille project including milestones and key learnings as well as some personal stories. We will introduce SomerVille governance and by-laws including an interactive demonstration of an election and decision making process. You will see some great interpretations of the SomerVille steps and the milestones at the yellow shed in the coming months.

A children and family meeting was held early in April and a variety of community members attended, parents, individuals and children participated. A variety of topics were discussed such as children's safety during construction and the by-laws. A new group was created – check out the section on Flipperoos!

Di Lesley is the champion for The SomerVille Way Handbook, which has a rather lovely new name of - The SomerVille Way: Spirit and Substance. There is room for all to get involved we will keep you posted. Thank you Di Lesley!

The Governance document, supporting documents and by-laws have been completed and will soon be available for viewing on the SomerVille Website! The production of these documents for O & A has been a mammoth task but we have finally reached the end point and are very pleased with the results.

To finish off the CUPID update for the Scoop I would like to let everyone know that my role here at Greenedge Projects will be changing as I go to casual employment and begin more university study. In fact today (Wednesday 21st) is my last official full-time day after a year of rewarding employment at Greenedge. I would like to thank everyone I've worked with over the past year and all the community members for making my job that much more enjoyable. We are currently looking for a replacement to help CUPID fill the tasks required but you will all be pleased to know that Fuchsia Carlino is now the "go to girl" for all matters social. I hope she enjoys the role as much as I have!

Community Update

There are two simple questions to check for what matters most, do the members whole-heartedly believe in the system they're using, and are they participating with enthusiasm? No amount of theory, dogma, or peer pressure can substitute for clarity of vision, open mindedness, good communication, the spirit of cooperation, common sense, and plain old hard work. - Geoph Kozeny

This is a new section that we thought others might like to add to as well. Its a community update, not just about the project but about the events of people's lives that you would like to let others in the community know about. We would love the community help keep us up to date with the lives of SomerVille members. If you have something you'd like to contribute then let Fuchsia know at fuchsia@greenedge.org

This month some SomerVille members have been getting together to organise the preparation and delivery of meals to Gabi. Members from all over Perth have, with the help of Judy Matisons (thanks Judy!) and Karen Moore, been cooking up a storm to help provide some wonderful delights. This is in the truest sense of community and it feels so right to be giving back to our wonderful friends.

Paul & Robin Antonelli >

On the 9th of May the Antonelli family headed off to Germany and some community members, family and friends got together to send them on their way. Their strength and positive attitude was an inspiration and we will all be thinking of them as they face this next phase of their amazing journey.

On the 6th of June, I (Kara) will be getting married to Jonathan in Darwin! We will unfortunately be missing SomerVille Sunday on the 8th, unless it's a subdivision party in which case we might just have to pop by on our way to Margaret River for our honeymoon. Otherwise we will certainly be catching up with everyone the following SomerVille Sunday in July.

Our wonderful Paul Moes has been away in Holland for the last 5 weeks to see his mother and has now returned to us. He described his time as a fantastic bonding experience and we are all happy to hear he had such a great time. Welcome home Paul Moes!

It is truly wonderful to hear about the activities of our community members so it would be wonderful if everyone could get involved in keeping us up to date.

FLIPPEROOS

Update provided by Fuchsia Carlino

We are a new group called the FLIPPEROOS.

During a community meeting for children and bigger children at SomerVille in April, we decided to get together as a group to help facilitate the discussion and great ideas for children and teenagers at SomerVille.

So we spent a little time considering who we are and what we want to do, we created our group vision;

Through fun, openness, imagination and respect we support a space for children and teenagers to adventure grow and live in our vibrant sustainable village.”

Our name? Well we thought with all these acronyms around the place we'd create a new one (almost an acronym) – Fun Lively Imaginative Passionate People valuing the Environment Respect Openness Opportunities and Support.

As a group, we (currently Faith, Debbie and Fuchsia) aim to work with the wider community moving ideas into action. So if you are a small, big or extra big kid it would be great to hear your ideas and as a community we can work together to create great stuff – just to spell that out, we would love to receive ideas from little people, and have them at our meetings.

What kind of stuff are we going to do? Fun stuff, creative stuff and practical stuff, and of course do all this the SomerVille Way and involve you. So please be involved, we will email you invites to meetings and be at Somerville Sundays.

Thanks, the Flipperoos.

If you want to contact us please email faith@greenedge.org or rubysound@hotmail.com or fuchsia@greenedge.org

My Story

Pia, Jens & Fin >

My Story of SomerVille

Jens Jacobsen

Once upon a time, I had what society would term a "good job" with great career prospects, a circle of good friends, a good home, in fact all seemed well. However, I had a deep sense that there must be more to life than this. Materially all was well, however I was not at peace within myself and consequently took off to see the world and "find myself".

I spent many years travelling and living in different countries and experiencing various cultures. I realised that the happiest people I encountered were those who were part of their community. Often I found this in the poorest communities. In fact, it seemed that adversity is the catalyst that creates connection.

Upon arriving in Australia I felt this is to be home. I had a dream that, one day I would arrive somewhere and have a deep knowing that this place is where I am meant to be. My partner and I finally stopped our wandering in Fremantle, with the intention to earn enough money to buy our five acres, build our own home, be self sufficient and live happily ever after.

At this time we heard of some people trying to raise the money to buy land to create a sustainable community called SomerVille. We registered on the mailing list but did little else.

Our dream faded and the business of life seemed to leave little time for pursuing dreams. We created a good life for ourselves, in a good area, with good neighbours. I became involved in sustainable building and started to realise the impact my life style was having on our planet.

The end of my marriage was the turning point in my life. I reconnected with the SomerVille community and realised that there are other people who want to make choices about the way we live by considering the impact on the planet and our fellow beings first. Together we can make a difference and create an environment that is sustainable and nurturing for everyone, a precious legacy to leave for those who follow.

I started to spend time on the land and realised one clear night that I had arrived at the place that I am meant to be.

Articles & Submissions

Solar Art for the Solar Park
Koon Tin Lim

Hi! fellow Somervillians.

I haven't written in the Scoop yet, so maybe its time is for me to have a go!

Let's see,.... maybe it is a topic that most of you guys relate me to ... ah ah, it must be about PV installations (apart from my less proper English and an unusual accent, of course).

I have, of late run into some PV installations done around the world that are more pieces of art and these may be something interesting that I am able to share with you, hopefully in colour as well, that is if I can get Christophe to help me sort it out.

Here are some of them;

A Solar Tree and a Solar Sundial

Solar Sail

Solar Regent Tower

Maybe we can get the Somerville Solar Park to be somewhat “arty” and iconic as well. That will be exciting, wouldn't it?

Nexus Car Share

Nexus allows households to get rid of a car and use a Nexus car for those trips that can't easily be taken by other forms of transport.

Members get access to cars when they need them with out the hassles or costs of car ownership.

There are huge cost benefits: no insurance, no rego, no car! Health and social benefits: people more often walk, ride or take the bus and get to meet their neighbourhood while keeping the streets safer - safe streets have lots of people walking or riding on them, not just cars whizzing by. And of course there are less greenhouse emissions and you never have to worry about paying the rego again.
