Business Champion: Reijer Groenveld
Vision
This enterprise will be aspiring to build the safest possible community at
SomerVille , and provide services and advice to residents and businesses to
minimize risk to people and property.
Mission
The aim of the enterprise is to work together with the SomerVille community
to provide and implement systems to manage risk, including financial risk,
to the individual resident, the community and SomerVille businesses. This

are to be provided to SomerVille (short term), Chidlow and surrounding
community (medium term), Ecovillages in Australia (long term).

Implementation of the Service
It is anticipated that the SomerVille risk and insurance enterprise will be
providing advice and offering insurance options prior to commencement of the
building phase and that the risk services will be utilized and integrated
into the processes to ensure a safe community whilst building residences and
the town centre infrastructure. This can be done by ensuring risk management
processes and strategies are used in each phase of the development and by
surveying the SomerVille residents and business community’s needs for these
services and products. It is anticipated that a number of standard products
are required across all residents and SomerVille businesses and therefore a
collective bargaining advantage can be explored with the insurance providers
so that savings can be achieved. By ensuring safety and risk are managed
within all spheres of the SomerVille project we can achieve greater
advantage in attracting products against more competitive prices. Once
integrated risk management services are in place, and a number of these
strategies have already been incorporated within the project eg a bush fire
strategy, SomerVille will have a distinct advantage over the general
community and be a safer place to live and a cheaper place to insure your
property and business.
This enterprise will be integrated with the SomerVille project and community
as an integral part of its development, and be on site and personalized
working with various groups within the SomerVille community.
Requirements
This enterprise will operate in a highly regulated market and environment
and therefore a number of regulatory requirements will need to be met. The
new regulations and policies have been put in place due to major corporate
and insurance issues over the past few years, and there are new standards,
policies and guidelines for the provision of insurance products and advice
being put in place through the Australian Securities and Investment
Commission and Insurance Council of Australia. Therefore prior to commencing
these services these requirements, including appropriate licensing and
training will need to be fulfilled.
Profile
My background in relation to insurance provision is having worked as health
professional for an insurance company for 6 years and managed an agency
dealing with the management of workers compensation and injury management.
From that basis I have moved into consultancy work in Occupational Safety
and Health, Risk management and the management of insurance portfolios for
both private and public organisations, including workers compensation and
public liability and property insurance. I am currently in the process of
completing Masters of Public Health at Curtin University.
