What is the SomerVille Ecovillage?

The SomerVille Ecovillage^TM project was inspired by the desire to create a world class ecovillage in Perth, Western Australia. Our vision is to live in "A vibrant village where community flourishes, in which every person is supported and contributes in balance with a sustainable ecological ethic."

The SomerVille Ecovillage^TM is a remarkable project, which has been in process for nearly seven years. Our ambition is to create one of the world's leading examples of what an ecovillage could be. Robert Gillman (2000), an expert in sustainability and positive cultural change defines an ecovillage as:

a human scale, full-featured settlement in which human activities are harmlessly integrated into the natural world in a way that is supportive of healthy human development and can be successfully continued into the indefinite future.

To date the opportunity to live in such a settlement has not been available within the Perth region. Now, with the development of the SomerVille Ecovillage^TM located in Chidlow (only 45 minutes drive from the centre of Perth) this is a realistic option for many people.

Permaculture principles are at the heart of this development, which acknowledges the close relationship needed between naturally occurring and manmade systems.  Sustainability of environmental, social and economic systems is crucial for a true ecovillage to evolve and thrive.
